EtherNet/IP vs PROFINET: Rockwell vs Siemens Industrial Ethernet
If your plant is Allen-Bradley, your industrial Ethernet is EtherNet/IP. If your plant is Siemens, it is PROFINET. These two protocols own the majority of the industrial-Ethernet installed base, and the choice between them is driven less by technical superiority than by which PLC ecosystem you are already committed to. Still, the differences matter — for real-time behavior, configuration workflow, device description, and how easily third-party tools can read the data.

The 30-Second Version
Both run on standard Ethernet. EtherNet/IP carries the CIP application layer (the same one used by DeviceNet and ControlNet) over TCP/UDP, with tag-based addressing on Allen-Bradley Logix controllers that makes ad-hoc reads trivial. PROFINET carries a real-time fieldbus (PROFINET IO) with device descriptions in GSDML files, configured inside an engineering tool like TIA Portal, with RT and IRT classes for deterministic cyclic I/O.

Interoperability
EtherNet/IP and PROFINET are not application-layer interoperable. They coexist on the same Ethernet physically, but a Rockwell controller cannot directly scan a PROFINET IO device, and vice versa. Bridging them requires either a protocol gateway or a controller that speaks both. Are EtherNet/IP and PROFINET compatible?
They are not directly interoperable at the application layer, but both run on standard Ethernet hardware. An EtherNet/IP device and a PROFINET device can share cabling and switches, but a controller of one type cannot natively scan devices of the other. A protocol gateway (or a controller that speaks both) is needed to move data between them.
Which is better, EtherNet/IP or PROFINET?
Neither is universally better. EtherNet/IP dominates the Rockwell/Allen-Bradley ecosystem in North America and uses tag-based addressing that is convenient for SCADA reads. PROFINET dominates the Siemens ecosystem and offers tighter deterministic real-time (RT/IRT) for motion and synchronized I/O. Choose by your PLC vendor and real-time requirements, not by abstract superiority.
Does EtherNet/IP support deterministic real-time like PROFINET IRT?
EtherNet/IP CIP Motion achieves deterministic motion control over standard Ethernet using time synchronization (CIP Time Sync) and IEEE 1588, but it is not the same hardware-level isochronous determinism as PROFINET IRT. For most factory I/O it is more than sufficient; for sub-cycle synchronized multi-axis motion, PROFINET IRT has a structural edge.
